Still Kinda Ridiculous: A Funky Font Trio That Actually Works

It was 3 p.m. on a Tuesday, and I had just opened a blank brand board for a new client—a small-batch ceramic studio launching their first line of handmade mugs and coasters. They’d asked for something warm, human, and quietly confident—not “cute,” not “corporate,” but unmistakably hand-made. I scrolled past my usual go-tos (yes, even that one script font I’ve used three times this year) and landed on Still Kinda Ridiculous. I hadn’t bought it yet—but I downloaded the trial, opened it in Illustrator, and typed “Clay & Co.” just to see what happened.

And honestly? It clicked—immediately. Not because it’s perfect, but because it’s *alive*. Still Kinda Ridiculous is a Script Amp font trio: three distinct yet harmonized scripts—each with its own rhythm, weight, and personality. One leans bouncy and rounded, another is sharper and more angular, and the third feels like ink freshly pulled from a flexible nib. All three share that same playful-but-never-silly energy: loose enough to feel handmade, tight enough to hold visual authority.

How It Performed Where It Counts

I tested Still Kinda Ridiculous across six real touchpoints: logo draft, brand board, packaging mockup (a matte kraft box with foil-stamped lid), business card (letterpress-printed), website hero section (with light gray background), and Instagram story layout. Here’s what stood out:

Where It Shines—and Where to Pause

Still Kinda Ridiculous is not a workhorse font. It’s a display font—a deliberate, expressive choice. It excels when you need warmth, craft, or subtle irony: bakery packaging, indie magazine covers, artisanal skincare labels, or creative studio identities. It adds instant character without demanding attention.

But let’s be clear: it’s not for body copy. Not for legal disclaimers. Not for multi-line product descriptions at 10 pt. And while the trio includes alternates and basic swashes, there are no small caps, no true italic variants, and minimal multilingual support beyond basic Latin-1. If your project needs Cyrillic, Vietnamese, or robust OpenType features, this isn’t the font to carry that load.

Pairing It Right (Without Overthinking)

I tried five pairings before landing on two that felt effortless:

  1. A soft, neutral sans serif—something with open apertures and gentle curves (like Inter or Manrope). Use it for all functional text: addresses, dates, ingredients, navigation menus.
  2. A quiet serif—think Merriweather or Lora—for editorial layouts or printed lookbooks. The contrast between Still Kinda Ridiculous’s looseness and the serif’s structure creates breathing room and hierarchy.

Avoid pairing it with other high-contrast scripts or decorative fonts—the trio already brings plenty of voice. And skip monospaced or ultra-geometric sans serifs unless you’re going full ironic juxtaposition (which can work—but only if it’s baked into the brand strategy).

Practical Notes Before You License It

The package includes OTF and WOFF2 files, basic ligatures, and stylistic alternates for key letters (like “a,” “g,” and “y”). There are no variable axes or weight sliders—just three thoughtfully crafted styles. That simplicity is part of its strength: it doesn’t ask you to tweak endlessly. It asks you to choose, commit, and move forward.

One non-negotiable: always check the commercial license. Still Kinda Ridiculous is sold as a premium font through Script Amp, and while personal use is covered in most bundles, client work—especially packaging, merch, or digital templates—requires an extended license. I double-checked before sending the final files to print. It took two minutes. Worth every second.

If you’re tired of fonts that try too hard to be “hand-drawn” or fall flat as logos, Still Kinda Ridiculous offers something rare: personality with precision. It’s funky—but never frivolous. Loose—but never sloppy. And yes, kinda ridiculous… in the best possible way.
