Skinny Things: A Friendly, Modern Font for Small Business Branding

It started with a candle label. I’d just restocked my lavender-vanilla jars and printed new stickers on my home printer—only to realize the font I’d been using for months looked thin, tired, and oddly disconnected from the warm, handmade feel of the product. The letters didn’t flow. They didn’t breathe. And worse—they didn’t match the quiet confidence I wanted customers to feel when they held that jar in their hands.

That’s when I found Skinny Things: a skinny hand-drawn font with a casual felt-tip charm. Not stiff. Not overly decorative. Just effortlessly modern, light, and carefree—like something you’d sketch on a napkin at your favorite café, then decide to build your whole brand around.

What makes Skinny Things special isn’t just how it looks—it’s how it *works*. As a script font from the Script Amp collection, it’s designed to be expressive without sacrificing clarity. It’s not meant for long paragraphs (no script font is), but it shines where small businesses need impact most: logos, product titles, packaging headers, social media quotes, thank-you cards, and menu specials.

I tested it right away—on my candle labels first. Swapped out the old sans serif headline for Skinny Things in all caps, sized just large enough to read clearly on a 2-inch sticker. Instantly, the label felt more intentional. More personal. Like the product had a voice—and it was calm, confident, and quietly joyful.

Since then, I’ve used Skinny Things across everything: the “Freshly Baked” header on my bakery’s takeout boxes, the handwritten-style tagline on my skincare serum bottle (“Gentle. Glowing. You.”), even the daily special board at my neighborhood café. Each time, it adds warmth without clutter, personality without pretension.

Here’s what surprised me most: how much consistency it brought to my brand. Before, I’d mix fonts haphazardly—sometimes a bold sans serif for Instagram posts, a different script for packaging, another one entirely for email headers. It wasn’t deliberate; it was just *easier*. But with Skinny Things as my go-to display font, everything started feeling like part of the same story. My Instagram stories matched my product tags, which matched my business cards—which all now share that same relaxed, human rhythm.

And yes—it’s readable. Even at small sizes. I use it at 10–12 pt on printed labels (with generous letter spacing), and it holds up beautifully on matte kraft paper and glossy sticker stock. On mobile screens? Perfect for quote graphics or limited-edition launch banners—just avoid cramming too many words into one line. Let it breathe. That’s part of its charm.

Pairing it is simple, too. I almost always pair Skinny Things with a clean, neutral sans serif—think a friendly, slightly rounded typeface like Poppins or Nunito for body text, captions, or ingredient lists. That contrast works magic: the script brings soul; the sans serif brings structure. For a more elevated look (say, on a boutique gift tag or coaching brand website), I’ll swap in a soft serif—something with gentle contrast and open counters, like Lora or Cormorant Garamond. Never two scripts together unless they’re intentionally complementary—and even then, I keep Skinny Things as the star.

One thing I double-checked before using it commercially? Licensing. Skinny Things is a commercial font, meaning it’s fully cleared for use on products, packaging, merchandise, digital templates, and client work—as long as you’ve purchased the proper license. I made sure the version I downloaded included OTF and WOFF files, basic OpenType features (like standard ligatures and stylistic alternates), and full Latin character support—enough for English, Spanish, French, and German product names and tags. No surprises later.

It’s also worth noting: Skinny Things is a single-weight display font—not a full family with bold or italic variants. That’s actually a strength for small brands. It keeps things focused. When you only have one standout script font, you learn to use it thoughtfully: for headlines, logo lockups, short phrases, and decorative accents—not for body copy or dense instructions. That discipline alone helped me tighten up my entire visual system.

I’ve seen it work beautifully for other makers, too: a ceramicist using Skinny Things on her studio stamp and Etsy shop banner; a tea seller printing it onto biodegradable sachet tags; a wedding planner weaving it into invitation suites and social media countdowns. In every case, it adds approachability—without losing polish.

Typography might sound like a “designer detail,” but for small businesses, it’s often the first thing people notice—and remember. A font like Skinny Things doesn’t shout. It invites. It says, “We made this with care,” without saying a word. It helps your packaging stand out on a crowded shelf, your Instagram post pause a scroll, your thank-you card feel like a real note—not a template.

And here’s the best part: it doesn’t require design expertise to use well. You don’t need to understand kerning or x-heights. You just need to know when something feels *right*. When your candle label makes you smile. When your customer texts you, “Love the handwriting on the box!” That’s Skinny Things doing its quiet, confident work.

So if you’re refreshing your brand visuals—or just realizing your current font no longer reflects who you are today—give Skinny Things a try. Not as an afterthought. Not as decoration. But as a thoughtful, consistent thread running through every piece of your business—from the first glance to the final unboxing.
